"In just one hour, The Kulunka Theatre Company presented to its audience a creative, sad, but also humorous piece about a couple’s battle with memory loss. Judging by the three curtain calls and audience’s standing ovation, and my own tears that fell during the performance, I would call a highly successful theatrical experience." --New York Theatre.
"André and Dorine is a story about Alzheimer’s, but mostly it’s a story about overcoming, struggle and love." --Cultural Magazine Modernícolas
In a small room where memories hung over the walls, sound the keys of a type writer and the notes of a cello. They are André and Dorine, an elderly couple that lives just like many old couples do: gently decaying from routine and neglect, with passion once so huge for each other now fading into indifference. But an event comes to break the monotony: Alzheimer’s, our greatest antagonist, devourer of memories and of identity itself.
And so begins a fresh start in their relation ship. A journey through memory. The couple needs to remember who they were, so as not to forget who they are now.Remember how they loved in order to keep loving each other.
Kulunka Teatro has created a piece of thoroughly contemporary and committed mask theatre that transcends language barriers. With no words, uplifting and thought provoking, it explores important themes with warmth and humour.
André and Dorine has toured extensively in Spain, South America, United States, China and Europe, and will continue its tour in Asia. It was an award winner at the Birmingham European Theatre Festival in 2011, and at the La Habana International Theatre Festival 2011 (Cuba).
*Pre-show talk 30 minutes before every performance in theater lobby, conducted in Chinese.
*Post-performance discussion After the opening performance, conducted in Spanish, and translated in Chinese.
KulunkaTheatre Company KulunkaTheatre Company was created in The Basque Country, Spain, in 2010 by Garbiñe Insausti and Jose Dault: Young but widely experienced theater career artists. This all stems from the concern of its members to experiment with different possible stage languages, relying on a stage that is itself a meeting point between different artistic disciplines. All this without forgetting the idea of making theatre accessible to the wide public. An idea of theatre that is vibrant, contemporary, committed and connected to reality.
In our goal of creating a show without boundaries, our desire is to find a language that transcends the word. A language that thrills and entertains. For this, we rely primarily on a theatre of gestures, in which MASKS act as a bridge to another world of a poetic visual endearing. Our masks, of deep features, so expressive, so full of life, open the doors of imagination and bring us to a universe in which everything is possible.
