"Infusing ’architecture’ into the performance by means of multi-media music theatre... A beautiful encounter with Louis Kahn, flowing along the rhythm and melody." ─Wen Wei Po, Hong Kong The Life and Times of Louis I. Kahn to be staged in Guangfu Hall of Zhongshan Hall, is one of Mathias Woo’s creations in his series of multi-media music theatre. The performance was premiered and rerun in Hong Kong in 2001, and was invited to participate in "The 27th International Alternative Theatre Festival" in Krakow, Poland in 2002. It had its third run in Hong Kong in 2007. Louis Kahn was one of the most inspiring architects of the 20th Century and a pioneer of minimalism, and The Life and Times of Louis I. Kahn is developed around the life and philosophy of this great architect. His architecture and his theories on architecture altered the aesthetics of international architecture in the 80’s and the 90’s. The reintroduction of classical elements in post-modernism, the strife for breakthroughs in High-Tech architecture and the reinvention and reinterpretation of concrete in modernism exercised a profound influence on architects like Tadao Ando, Norman Foster and Michael Graves. In 2004, his son Nathaniel Kahn made a biographical documentary film, "My Architect" on him. This film is a personal quest of a son in search of his father, and Nathaniel Kahn wished to get to know more about his father through the making of this film. In this performance, Mathias Woo is experimenting on the relationship of light, space and materials through theatre, with the perspectives and ideology of Louis Kahn. For this production, he has also invited ’The Father of Hong Kong Television’, Kam Kwok Leung, who is also the mentor of the filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and the dramatist Edward Lam, to participate in this performance, to play the role of Louis Kahn. Kam Kwok Leung has been working in the mass media for over 30 years, and his involvements in the showbiz include television, music, radio and writing. Many of his works have become classics and household names. He is among one of the very few names worthy of the hall of fame, and he has won himself thousands of loyal followers with his bold and unique style. Kam is so full of fun and dynamic that whenever he is present, he would become the centre of attention, and his participations always turn out to be great successes filled with delightful surprises. In this performance, Kam excels himself again and gives a most impressive interpretation. The audience would be startled by the similarities between him and Louis Kahn, in appearances, voices and mannerisms. This would be an ultimate performance of professionalism and talent. Apart from Kam Kwok Leung, the Director has also invited Jason Choi of ’People Mountain People Sea’, the producer of Sammi Cheng, as well as Yu Yat Yiu to participate in the production. They would work on the recordings of Kahn’s lectures as a start, and then experiment on the music of Mozart. The music bi-weekly "mcb" describes Jason Choi’s live performance in this work to be "a beautiful interpretation of post-rock music, and a very powerful rendition of theatre music with great impact."
